Omar Abdullah eyeing power via Article 35 (A), says BJP

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday said that former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is trying to politicize Article 35 (A) issue to come to power.

BJP leader S. Prakash said that Abdullah is creating unwarranted noise around the provision, as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has clarified that no proposal in this regard has been put forth in front of the Centre.

Abdullah On Friday sought a special session of Jammu and Kashmir Legislature before August 29, to frame up an appropriate response to counter the narrative with regard to tampering or repealing of Article 35A of the Constitution.

Abdullah expressed grave concern over the reported unsatisfactory response of the Union and the State governments in putting up a strong case before the apex court in safeguard of the Article 35A.

The NC Chief hoped that "the people of Jammu and Kashmir will rise above party politics and fight every overt or covert attempts to trample the Article 35A, which is regional neutral, religious neutral and ethnic neutral".

He said abrogation of this proviso is detrimental to every segment of society in Jammu and Kashmir.

BJP not involved in desertion by 6 Congress MLAs in Gujarat, says Javadekar

Rejecting the Congress’ charge of poaching its MLAs in Gujarat, the BJP said on Sunday it had no role in the recent desertion by six of its legislators and wondered whether they were “purchasable”.

It also said the sole of aim of the Congress was to save its vice president Rahul Gandhi in the country and Ahmed Patel in Gujarat.

Javadekar noted that senior Congress leaders like Shankersinh Vaghela, a former chief minister and the leader of opposition, its chief whip Balwantsinh Rajput and its spokesperson Tejashreeben Patel have left the party and wondered if the opposition party was suggesting that they could be “bought”.

“They are all strong leaders. Nobody can purchase them. The Congress should look inwards and think why such senior leaders are leaving it. The truth is that its only goal is to save Rahul Gandhi in the country and Ahmed Patel in Gujarat,” he said.

Patel is seeking re-election to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat but defection by a number of Congress MLAs has left the party worried. The BJP has fielded Rajput, who quit the Congress on Thursday, against Ahmed Patel to further queer his pitch.

The Congress was growing weak across the country and it was not the BJP’s fault, Javadekar said.

Robert Pious, Rajiv Gandhi's killer languishing in jail for 27 years, seeks mercy killing

Chennai: Robert Pious, one of the convicts in former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has written to the Tamil Nadu government and DG Prisons seeking mercy killing.

According to  reports, in his letter, Robert Pious had said that he has been in prison for over 27 years and has lost any purpose in life.

"I've been in prison for more than 27 years now...I can understand the intention of the government and as none of my family member have come to see me, I don't find anymore purpose in life," Pious said in his letter.

The Supreme Court has already dismissed the pleas of the Tamil Nadu government and one convict seeking review of its judgement in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case in which was ruled that the Centre has "primacy" over states' right to grant remission.

The Tamil Nadu government had on July 28 last year moved the apex court seeking review of its judgement in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

The petition had sought review of the apex court's verdict given in December 2015, virtually overturning the state government's clemency decision.

A five-judge bench had in 2015 said that the state governments must secure "concurrence" of the Union government before freeing convicts in certain cases.

Syria, Iraq examine coordinate collaboration against Islamic State: SANA

BEIRUT: An Iraqi agent met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Thursday to investigate coordinate military collaboration against Islamic State (IS) activists, Syrian state media said.

U.S.- sponsored Iraqi powers have been wearing down the rest of the areas of Mosul under Islamic State control, seven months into a crusade to recover Iraq's second biggest city.

"They (Assad and Fayad) investigated the possibility of direct participation soon between the Syrian and Iraqi armed forces to battle fear based oppression by and large," SANA said.

Iraqi warplanes have hit IS inside Syria in a joint effort with Damascus. IS holds swathes of region in northwestern Iraq and eastern Syria, yet has lost impressive ground to U.S.- supported military offensives over the previous year.

In Syria, Islamic State is contending energetically against a few separate adversaries, including Russian-upheld Syrian government strengths, attempting to fortify its nearness as it is being pushed back in neighboring parts of Iraq.
